Tomorrow morning, I will be heading out to the Klein Karoo so spend my 25th birthday making my way back the Cape on my Mountain Bike.
I’ll be joining 4 seasoned Adventure Racers on this trip, completely unsupported (no cars, no help, nothing but the heat of the Karoo beating down on our backs). We are plotting a new section of the growing-in-popularity Freedom Challenge for 2010.
The trip will kick off from CTN Station tomorrow where we board the train and head off to Laingsberg. Ever heard of it? No? I’m not surprised. I’ve been there once. It is hot (as hell). It is remote (as hell). It is boring (as hell).
Here’s the itinerary for the trip:

I will do my best to ‘live blog’ the trip as well as Steve, the Organiser.
More to follow ladies and gents, watch this space
This will be My Boy’s (Still nameless, the Mountain Bike man..) virgin decent-MTB ride. I hope he holds out and gets me to where I need to be. More importantly, in one piece. I am sure that there will be plenty of good stories to unfold in the up-and-coming week. Enjoy the read, as I enjoy the life

Wednesday’s weather was foul – Windy, cloudy and generally miserable. A great day for a 2 hour run!
The group of us started at the base of the Pipe Track on Table Mountain and made our way up, through Camps Bay towards Kasteelspoort (a ravine running up the see-facing side of the mountain).
It was a hard, steep run/hike until we got to the cloud-line. It then became a hard, steep, WINDY, WET run/hike! Once we got to the top of the Mountain, the run leader asked if I would mind taking over. I agreed as we couldn’t see more than 4m ahead of ourselves and with fog like that – no one wants to get lost up there.
I took the ladies and gents on a fast-pased run down to the Scout Hut, around both the dams (which are bursting atm) and a few kilometers later, we were back at Kasteels, making our way down. By now, it was pitch-dark too with heavy fog. I’d kept the breaks short to ensure that no one got cold/hyperthermia.. all in all, we made it to the Old Brown Sherry which awaited us at the bottom, safely and in one peice.
This was the first of many runs semi-led by myself. I’ve been asked to lead some runs in the future which I will be doing! With spring now in the air.. so they tell us, I will be doing some more ‘adventure’ orrientated runs through the mountains. Watch this space!

Saturday was the first of many training rides, preparing me for the Double Century 2009.
Some things in life are soul-destroying.. this was one of them.
Up until now, I have been muching about with fitness. Fit? Yes, I am. Able to cycle up Sir Lowries Pass, then Grabou Pass, followed by Franshoek Pass and finally topped off with Hellshoogte Pass – that was a little more than I should have bitten off.
None-the-less, I finished the ride, in around 8 hours (145kms & a hell of a lot of climbing!). My legs took 24 more to recover. Perhaps closer to 48..
I’m going to be putting myself through this on a weekly basis with a couple smaller rides before work in the wee hours. Insane? Perhaps.. but mark my words – come the Double Century.. I’m going to laugh at those mountain passes! Last year I struggled, this year I will dominate!

Last weekend had me up nice and early, with Table Mountain in my sights. The Puffer 2009!
Now, needless to say – I was not taking part. Yes, I have started to do regular trail runs.. but my little (pastey) legs are not ready for 80kms of hell, That’s right, EIGHTY.
The guys and gals from the CRAG Runners and I met at about 9h30 in the morning at the foot of Constantia Neck. Myself and the Doctor heading up the paths while the rest caught a lift in the cars (with permits obviously
).
Will, the winner, came past us once we’d hit the water spot we were Marchalling/Running ten minutes after we’d setup – a staggering 25mins ahead of second, Louis (I believe his name was) who holds the record for the quickest Puffer!
All in all, it was a lovely morning, cheering the 120 guys and gals that were taking part! Some (10) of whom were doing the Tuffer Puffer (The Puffer, twice. 160km in one stint!!!).
Just as we were packing up, I was asked if I’d like to sweep the last of the runners for the race. Unfortunately, I had hiking boots on and not running shoes.. next year
A hearty Congratulations to James Fraiser who came 9th! He is in fact the man behind motivating me to to anything remotely ‘active’ – an Ex High School teacher. Brilliant effort man! Perhaps one day when I’m a little more solid, I’ll second you?
